The Other Guys is an action-comedy film directed and co-written by Adam McKay. The film stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, and co-stars Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes, Ray Stevenson, Steve Coogan, Rob Riggle and Damon Wayans, Jr. The film was released on August 6, 2010. This film is the fourth collaboration between Ferrell and McKay.
New York City Detective Allen Gamble (Will Ferrell) is a forensic accountant who is into paperwork and refuses to do fieldwork. Detective Terry Hoitz (Mark Wahlberg) has been stuck working with Gamble since shooting Derek Jeter. Gamble admires top cops Highsmith (Samuel L. Jackson) and Danson (Dwayne Johnson), but when Gamble and Hoitz's chance to prove themselves arises, things don't go as planned. -
The Other Guys" was surprisingly well in the beginning. Will Ferrell is not typecast as some obnoxious leading man but plays well as a do-nothing cop. Mark Wahlberg is over the top with his performance, which is what more than likely was expected of him in this type of film anyway. Eva Mendes does really well in this movie and brings in more of the laughs than the movie's leading men.
The film starts relatively funny, with banter by Ferrell and Wahlberg that make the movie seem not as predictable as first thought. As the story progresses, the comedy becomes stale. It's as if they had a good concept for a parody of cop action films, but they didn't know how to finish it properly, and it becomes the thing it is parodying. The plot near the ending can confuse many if not paying attention, and for this movie you would think you wouldn't need that much of an attention span to understand it.
Bottom line, it promises something new, but ends up being the same ol' buddy cop comedy that we saw 5 months ago when "Cop Out" came out. The idea was there, but they couldn't continue with something fresh and humorous.
Wait till this movie is out on DVD, or dollar theater. Don't spend 10 dollars unless you have a date that you REALLY want to spend the night with.
It's an okay movie. -
